Presentation Time Management Guide
Short Pitch (5-10 min)
For elevator pitches and quick presentations, focus on one core message. Structure: 1 minute hook, 3-7 minutes main content, 1-2 minutes conclusion. Prepare 5-10 slides max. Practice until you can deliver naturally within the time limit without rushing.
Conference Talk (15-20 min)
The sweet spot for most presentations. TED talks cap at 18 minutes for good reason - it is long enough to develop ideas but short enough to maintain attention. Use the 3-act structure: setup (3 min), development (10-12 min), conclusion (3-5 min). Include 2-3 key takeaways.
Lecture / Workshop (30-60 min)
Break into 10-minute segments with transitions, questions, or activities. Include a 5-minute break every 25-30 minutes. Interactive elements every 10 minutes keep engagement high. Reserve 10-15% of time for Q&A at the end or distribute questions throughout.

Speaking Rate Tips
The average speaking rate is 130-150 words per minute. Nervous speakers tend to speed up to 170+ WPM, so use a timer to practice pacing. Slow down for key points and pause for 2-3 seconds between sections to let ideas sink in.
Rehearsal rule: Your actual presentation will be 10-15% longer than rehearsal due to audience interaction, technical issues, and natural pauses. Time your rehearsal and aim to finish at 85-90% of your allotted time.
